The Mohave County Board of Supervisors announced on March 19 that its members may attend the retirement celebration for Sam Elters, scheduled for March 27 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 700 W Beale Street, Kingman, Arizona, on the second floor mezzanine. The notice states that no legal action will be discussed or taken during this event.
This announcement is important as it informs both board members and the public about potential gatherings of elected officials outside regular meetings, ensuring transparency and compliance with open meeting laws.
The notice was issued by Laura Skubal, Clerk of the Board for Mohave County. It emphasizes that while supervisors may be present at the event honoring Elters’ career, there will be no official county business conducted.
Meanwhile, recent educational data highlights ongoing challenges in Mohave County schools. In the 2022-23 school year, 69.4% of students in grades three through eight did not pass the mathematics section of the AASA assessment according to the Arizona Department of Education. Similarly, 77% of high school students failed the mathematics section of the ACT during that same period according to state data. English proficiency also remains a concern: 64% of third through eighth graders and 65% of high schoolers did not pass their respective English assessments as reported by state education officials.
However, there have been some improvements in more recent results. For the 2023-24 school year, Mohave County saw a slight increase in student performance: 22% of high schoolers passed the mathematics section of the ACT according to state records, and nearly one-third (31.9%) of students in grades three through eight passed math on the AASA assessment according to education authorities.
The upcoming retirement event for Sam Elters provides an opportunity for community recognition while maintaining adherence to public meeting regulations.
