City of Tempe issued the following announcement on July 8.
Downtown Tempe Authority and the City of Tempe are proud to celebrate and honor veterans and active-duty members this November through the Elevate Our Heroes Banner Program. Through this program, community members, businesses, or organizations can sponsor a banner to honor a military member, living or deceased, local or not, through a full-color banner displayed in Downtown Tempe.
Elevate Our Heroes is one of two programs in Arizona that allows community members to honor and recognize military members through individualized banners displayed in the community. Each banner can be customized with a name, branch of service, and official military photo of the service person. Banners will be displayed on Downtown Tempe’s iconic lamp posts in November 2021 and November 2022. After November 2022, banners will be returned to the sponsoring members or businesses as a keepsake.
“We are excited to launch a program where families, friends, coworkers, or businesses can honor and celebrate a hero in their life or the community, said Kate Borders, Executive Director of Downtown Tempe Authority. This program is a living tribute in Downtown Tempe to recognize and honor the brave military heroes who served, are serving, or have given their lives for our country.”
The Elevate Our Heroes Banner Program was made possible through ongoing collaboration and partnership between Downtown Tempe Authority, the City of Tempe, and the Tempe City Council. This program was presented to and received full support from Tempe City Council in June. “The military heroes in our community deserve to be honored and recognized in a special way,” said Tempe Councilmember Robin Arredondo-Savage. “Their service to our country will be on full display in downtown Tempe as we show our gratitude through this unique banner program.”
Downtown Tempe Authority manages the Elevate Our Heroes program and is working with Military Tribute Banners to print the banners. Military Tribute Banners works with cities and organizations throughout the country on similar programs. Sponsors will work directly with staff at Military Tribute Banners to customize and proof their tribute banner before it is printed. The cost of each banner is $100 if the order and payment are received by September 1, 2021. The price increases to $125 after September 2, 2021. The deadline for all orders and payments is October 1.
Donations are also being accepted to support the program and help remove financial barriers from families who want to honor a hero in their life.
