Tempe, AZ – Tempe has expanded cooling center space at its EnVision Center to serve more people in need as the region continues to battle sweltering heat.
The city opened the EnVision Center, 1310 E. Apache Blvd., for heat relief June 5. It has served more than 2,200 visitors so far, with as many as 100 seeking respite in a single day. The city is now investing $40,000 to open and staff an unused portion of the building.
“Record temperatures have made this summer particularly dangerous and we want everyone who needs it to have a place to cool off,” said Mayor Corey Woods. “Please take advantage of cooling centers in the city and call our CARE & HOPE Line at 480-350-8004 if you need help connecting to other resources.”
The EnVision Center is open daily noon to 8 p.m. Visitors can cool off, hydrate and get information about city and community resources. The city is partnering with Arizona Faith Network to provide staffing at the center.
There are nine cooling centers available in Tempe: Cahill Senior Center, Pyle Adult Recreation Center, Escalante Community Center, Kiwanis Recreation Center, North Tempe and Westside multi-generational centers, Mountain Park Health Center and Salvation Army (on excessive heat warning days). All are open through Sept. 30.
Location information and other resources like utility bill help and emergency home repair funds are at tempe.gov/HeatRelief.
