Participate in Tempe's first ever community read! One Tempe One Book is a citywide reading event happening throughout the month of October. By uniting readers around one book, Disability Visibility edited by Alice Wong, the library is working to build a sense of community, promote reading and develop a shared understanding.

The Book: Disability Visibility

From original pieces by authors like Keah Brown and Haben Girma, to blog posts, manifestos, eulogies, testimonies, and more, this anthology gives a glimpse into the rich complexity of the disabled experience, highlighting the passions, talents and everyday lives of this community. It celebrates and documents disability culture in the now.

A companion book is also adapted for youth adults. The seventeen eye-opening essays in Disability Visibility (Adapted for Young Adults), all written by disabled people, offer keen insight into the complex and rich disability experience, examining life’s ableism and inequality, its challenges and losses, and celebrating its wisdom, passion, and joy. It is essential reading for all.

How to participate in Tempe's first ever community read:

  1. Pick up a free copy of the book from the library or one of our partners. Books will be available starting next week. Audio and e-book versions will be available at no cost in October on Libby.
  2. Read and participate in the programming happening in Tempe in October. We'll have talks with local authors, resources for people with disabilities, events for teens and veterans, reading challenges, a Sunday book club for each section of the book and so much more.
  3. Connect with your community! How will you take action on what you know? Check out bonus materials on our website.
