CHANDLER, Ariz. – Chandler City Council awarded a professional services agreement to Dig Studio for the design of new pickleball courts at Tumbleweed Park, in an amount not to exceed $282,226.
Since 2018, the City of Chandler has constructed 10 pickleball courts within existing parks. Even with those courts in place, the Parks and Recreation Strategic Plan, adopted by City Council in August 2021, found that the city is deficient in meeting the national standard pickleball court ratio of one court per 12,000 people.
This project will design and build a pickleball facility with 18 courts. Once these courts are completed, Chandler will exceed the ratio for today’s population, with the goal of continuing to meet or exceed the standard as the population grows. Funding for the design and construction of the courts was approved as a part of the 2024-2033 Capital Improvement Program.
The project may include, but is not limited to, lighted pickleball, shade ramadas, restrooms, practice areas, landscaping, lighting, restrooms, drinking fountains and parking.
The new courts will be located south of Germann Road, just east of the Tumbleweed Recreation Center.
As with all park development projects, resident input on the design of these courts was very important. A pickleball focus group composed of Chandler residents was formed to help develop an initial conceptual plan. On August 15, 2023, a public meeting was held to receive input on the conceptual design and the residents were very supportive of the concept.
The design services agreement includes, but is not limited to, landscape, architecture, civil, mechanical, electrical, and geotechnical engineering, survey, data collection, utility coordination, schematic plans, design development plans, construction documents, technical specifications, permit submittal, estimates, meetings and public outreach.
