Congressman Paul A. Gosar, representing Arizona's 9th District, expressed approval following the passage of H.R. 82, known as the Social Security Fairness Act of 2023. This legislation aims to repeal two provisions of Social Security: the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO). These provisions have been criticized for reducing benefits for certain workers who also receive a pension based on earnings exempt from Social Security payroll taxes.
"Social Security is one of the most important programs in the United States and is a vital source of income for many citizens of Arizona," said Congressman Gosar. He highlighted his role as a cosponsor of H.R. 82 and shared his satisfaction with Congress's decision to repeal WEP and GPO, which he believes have unfairly affected thousands in Arizona.
"This nonsense policy punishes hard work and prudent planning. If you paid into Social Security, the government should not punish you and take your hard-earned benefits just because you’re a firefighter, police officer or a teacher,” Congressman Gosar stated.
