Congressman Paul Gosar has announced the Senate's approval of H.R. 7365, known as the Veterans Expedited TSA Screening (VETS) Safe Travel Act. This bipartisan legislation, introduced by Gosar, aims to provide expedited security screening under the Transportation Security Administration's (TSA) PreCheck program for severely injured or disabled veterans at no cost.
"I am very pleased that my bipartisan and common-sense bill passed the Senate expeditiously and will now be sent to Mr. Biden’s desk for signature and enactment," stated Congressman Gosar. "No American veteran, particularly disabled veterans, should be hassled at our airports. With successful passage in the Senate, the VETS Safe Travel Act is one step closer to becoming law."
The VETS Safe Travel Act was introduced by Congressman Gosar on February 15, 2024. It passed the House of Representatives on December 10, 2024, and subsequently cleared the Senate on December 19, 2024, through an expedited procedure requiring unanimous consent.
The act mandates that the Department of Veterans Affairs certify a veteran as severely injured to qualify for free application to the TSA PreCheck program. The TSA would then process their application after they pass a background check and interview.
According to data from the Department of Veterans Affairs, around 325,000 veterans could benefit from this complimentary PreCheck screening program.
The legislation has garnered support from several organizations including Wounded Warrior Project, Paralyzed Veterans of America, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, Blinded Veterans Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Operation Second Chance Inc., Unified Arizona Veterans, Texas Coalition of Veteran Organizations, and Veterans Airlift Command.
