Congressman Paul A. Gosar has introduced a new piece of legislation named the Putting Trust in Transparency Act. This bill mandates nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) receiving federal funding to publicly disclose their donors. This introduction took place in Washington, D.C. and involves significant potential changes to the transparency requirements of these organizations.
In a statement, Congressman Gosar remarked, “Over the past decade, NGOs have increasingly played an outsized role in facilitating woke policies including radical climate proposals, locking up federal lands and assisting in the transportation of illegal aliens from the southern border to communities across our country. Sadly, the federal government, by providing significant taxpayer dollars to NGOs is complicit in promoting such liberal-biased agendas."
Gosar further asserted that the public's right to transparency in spending is being undermined by what he described as NGOs often engaging in politically motivated activities. He stated, "The American people have a right to know how their money is spent and who funds taxpayer-supported NGOs. The Putting Trust in Transparency Act protects taxpayers by mandating that any NGO that receives funds from the federal government must publicly disclose their extravagant donors."
He noted the importance of the legislation he sponsored, emphasizing the necessity for NGOs to “operate in clear neutral boundaries rather than advancing radical causes on the taxpayers’ dime.”
Currently, NGOs are legally obligated to report private contributions over $5,000 with detailed information about the donor. However, Gosar's legislation aims to address issues where the IRS publishes redacted forms which are not easily accessible. His proposed act calls for the complete and unredacted publication of IRS Form 990 Schedule B within 60 days.
The bill has original cosponsors including Representatives Biggs, Brecheen, Burchett, Crane, Nehls, Norman, and Weber, with support from the Center for Renewing America.
