The DUI Abatement Council has awarded a $100,000 grant to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
The grant, which is $20,000 more than last year’s grant, will go toward DUI enforcement across the state. It will benefit enforcement by paying for overtime, staffing and other employee costs. The grant will also allow the Arizona Department of Public Safety to have additional troopers, which can be deployed to areas with statistically known higher DUI injuries and crashes.
The department said having more troopers can reduce the risk that a fatal or serious accident takes place by assisting in stopping drivers who are under the influence before anything happens, according to Mohave Valley Daily News.
Many things can interfere with a regular duty trooper’s productive patrol, such as criminal violations, crash investigations, court hearings, disabled motorists, debris and other duties they might have. This grant would allow productive patrol time to be increased for troopers, which would help in focusing attention on finding drivers under the influence.
