Last year, Arizona fourth-graders scored an average of 216 on standardized reading tests, which is four points lower than the national average, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) said.
When ranked among all 50 states in the U.S. and the District of Columbia, Arizona’s students ranked 40th when it came to average standardized test scores.
Most fourth graders who took the standardized reading test in Arizona did score above the basic achievement level (61 percent), but 31 percent of all Arizona fourth graders who tested scored at or below the proficiency level, the NAEP’s analysis said.
Out of Arizona’s 52 jurisdictions, 17 of them had fourth graders with test scores averaging above the U.S. average and 23 of the jurisdictions had test scores that were approximately the same as the national average, NAEP’s study showed. Arizona also had 12 jurisdictions that showed average scores far below the national average.
