The push-in & wet down ceremony dates back to horse-drawn steamer engines. Horses will not walk backward when they are under a load. When a new steamer was delivered to a firehouse, the assigned members would have

to push it into the firehouse. The wet down is a ritual wash down of a new engine that dates back to the 1800s when the neighboring fire station would

bring their horse-drawn engine over and wash down the new one.
