Mohave Community College is launching I-BEST, an Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training program, for welding, automotive technology and medical assisting. The program helps adult learners earn a GED and a college certificate at the same time.
Students in the I-BEST program have the opportunity to develop skills for high demand jobs, improve English and math skills, start a career pathway and earn credits towards a certificate and degree.
“The I-BEST program is just what it suggests a new opportunity for students to become their best selves. Stacking these two paths into one not only reduces the amount of time required to complete their education and enter the workforce, but it also provides students built-in academic and student support that is relevant to the careers that they are pursuing,” said Jason Gee, Interim Dean of Career and Technical Education.
Gee added that a traditional college pathway requires a high school diploma or GED to be earned first but this program jump starts the process by allowing eligible recipients to work on both their GED and their industry-specific skills at the same time.
Through the program, students are able to learn faster and go further in their employment opportunities and overall educational goal.
Students in the I-BEST program pay tuition like other MCC students. MCC has an affordable tuition rate starting at $81 per credit hour. Students may be eligible for financial aid or scholarship opportunities and are encouraged to start the financial aid application as soon as possible.
The I-BEST program is available on all four MCC campuses for Medical Assisting. Welding and Automotive Technology are only offered on the Bullhead City campus. Classes start Aug. 22.
