Mohave County Sheriff’s Office Division of Boating Safety continued their investigation into a drowning that occurred on Saturday (10/8). Deputies received reports on Saturday that a male subject had entered the lake to swim and never resurfaced. Divers and Patrol boats searched the area where the male was last seen using side scan sonar technology beginning first thing Sunday (10/9) morning.
At 11:15 am, the male subject was located deceased in approximately 32 feet of water. The subject has been positively identified as Michael Dean Phan, 47 of Garden Grove, CA. The deceased male was conveyed to the Mohave County Medical Examiner’s Office, who will perform the autopsy to determine the cause of death.
ORIGINAL 10/08/2022: DROWNING- LAKE HAVASU
On Saturday (10/8), the Mohave County Sheriff's Office Division of Boating Safety responded to the area of the North Basin of Lake Havasu near The Lake Havasu State Park for reports of a male subject that jumped from a boat to go swimming, and never resurfaced. Deputies arrived to the area, and immediately deployed rescue divers into the water. Several Divers searched the area, but were unable to locate the victim. A helicopter was utilized to search the water's surface and shorelines, but were also unsuccessful in locating the victim.
During the incident, winds were gusting in upwards of 40 miles per hour, and waves were over three feet tall. During the search, divers encountered almost zero visibility underwater, with large trees present on the lake bottom.
The search continue into Sunday (10/9), utilizing divers and side scan sonar technology. Please be aware of public safety resources in the area.
