BULLHEAD CITY — Less than 10 seconds into their "Fitness Court Challenge," it was obvious the Bullhead City Fire Department entries in the competition on the new exercise facility at Rotary Park were at a serious disadvantage.
After Firefighter/EMT Evan Smith and Bullhead City Police Office Kesean Walker dropped to to their first push-up, then sprang to their feet for a jump, Smith had to stop for a moment and readjust his BCFD-issued fire turnout.
Walker, wearing his BCPD SWAT uniform, had no such trouble, continuing his series of 10 burpees uninterrupted while Smith had to pause for a quick tug of the pants on each.
By the end of the first station of the challenge, Walker had a big lead. At the end of the next set of reps of incline pushups, the lead had grown.
Walker finished his part of the challenge relay, sending teammate Officer Joe Morgridge onto the course, well before Smith had reached the final station.
Smith finished his part and Firefighter/EMT Joe Jackson tried his best to close the gap but he, too, struggled with keeping his heavy fire-protective turnout in place while Morgridge, another SWAT-clad competitor, had no wardrobe-caused limits to his movements and cruised to the finish.
