Chandler, Arizona - The Chandler City Council has given the green light for the expansion of the Tumbleweed Recreation Center (TRC). The project, which is set to begin in early 2024, will add approximately 11,000 square feet of space to the existing facility, providing more opportunities for the community to engage in recreational activities.

The expansion will include a range of amenities and programming spaces to cater to individuals of all ages and ability levels. According to the plans, there will be two multipurpose rooms, two patios with shade structures, a fitness room, game area, restrooms, events hall, lobby, reception area with a separate entrance, and updated landscaping. Additionally, the front of the building will be enhanced with a new shade structure and signage. The project also includes the necessary upgrade of the fire alarm system.

Mayor Kevin Hartke expressed his excitement about the expansion, stating, "The expansion of the Tumbleweed Recreation Center is a significant development for our community. It will provide a much-needed space for residents of all ages to participate in recreational activities and enhance their overall well-being."

In accordance with city ordinance, the expansion project will also incorporate a public art element. The city's Arts Commission recommended the inclusion of a walkway with arches leading into the new facility. This addition will add an aesthetic touch to the expansion, further enriching the experience for visitors.

The decision to expand the TRC was based on the findings of a Senior Needs Assessment conducted by the Community Services Department in 2017. The assessment revealed the need for more space to accommodate the growing demand for senior programs. A City Council Subcommittee reviewed the assessment and recommended the development of a Multigenerational Recreation Center Feasibility Study. The study, conducted by GreenPlay, LLC, confirmed the need for a new facility in Chandler. After considering various options, the City Council approved the expansion of the existing TRC.

Construction of the expansion will be overseen by the Chasse Building Team, Inc. The project is scheduled to commence in early 2024 and is expected to be completed by spring 2025.
