The City of Chandler in Arizona has initiated its first tree inventory project to evaluate the diversity and health of the city's community forest. The project, which began in January 2024, involves collecting data on each tree located within over 1,500 acres of Chandler's public parks and facilities. ArborPro USA has been contracted to conduct the inventory, measuring the size, height, and overall physical health of each tree.
Chandler's tree inventory is an essential component of the city's urban forest management plan. By accurately assessing the species and health of the trees, the data collected will help monitor the balance of tree diversity, identify planting needs, recognize maintenance requirements, and establish long-term care plans.
Ryan McCartney, the City of Chandler Urban Forester, highlighted the significance of focusing on the health and diversity of trees within the desert climate of Chandler. He emphasized the benefits of a thriving urban forest, such as filtering urban pollutants and improving water quality. McCartney stated, "The tree inventory program will provide tools and data to maintain a sustainable urban forest."
The project is partly funded by a $40,000 Community Challenge Grant awarded to Chandler by the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management (DFFM). This grant aims to support and enhance urban and community forestry programs. Updates on the inventory process can be found on the City of Chandler Urban Forestry webpage.
The City of Chandler's commitment to its urban forest reflects its dedication to creating sustainable and healthy neighborhoods. The tree inventory project will provide valuable insights for maintaining and improving the city's urban environment.
