The Chandler City Council has approved an agreement with Logan Simpson Design, Inc. to serve as a consultant for the update of the city's South Arizona Avenue Area Plan, also known as the Downtown Area Plan. The agreement, approved during the City Council's Jan. 24 meeting, will be funded through the city's General Fund, with a budget of up to $294,953.
Chandler's area plans are designed to address the unique characteristics and land use planning needs of specific areas. Currently, the downtown area is covered by two plans: the Chandler Redevelopment Element, adopted in 1987 and readopted in 1995, and the South Arizona Avenue Area Plan, adopted in 2006.
The new Downtown Area Plan aims to provide a comprehensive update to both existing plans. It will include updates to design guidelines for the entire area, ensuring compatibility with redevelopment projects and preservation of adjacent historic assets. The plan will also focus on adaptive reuse and the preservation of historic neighborhoods like Silk Stocking and Southside Village.
To ensure transparency and public input, the project scope includes multiple opportunities for feedback. The update process will involve digital outreach, character area/visioning workshops utilizing augmented and virtual reality, and other outreach methods. The project is expected to be completed within 12 months after the notice to proceed.
Mayor Kevin Hartke expressed his enthusiasm for the update, stating, "The Downtown Area Plan update is an important step in ensuring the continued growth and development of our vibrant downtown area. We are committed to preserving the historic character of the area while also accommodating new redevelopment projects."
The City of Chandler is excited about the opportunities that the Downtown Area Plan update will bring. As stated on the official website, "Chandler's parks, pools, museums, art galleries, hotels, resorts, golf courses, restaurants, and ample shopping opportunities make this one of Arizona's great cities to live, play, and work." The plan update will further enhance the city's appeal and provide a roadmap for future growth and development.
