The Colorado River Union High School District board has voted, 4-0, to close campuses across the state for the remainder of the school season.
Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, campuses are expected to remain closed until the fall.
Campuses have been closed since March 5. The state has been under a state of emergency since March 13. The state of emergency was issued by Gov. Doug Ducey. Closing schools was one of Ducey's first orders in an effort to flatten the curve of COVID-19, but Ducey also wants students to keep up on their school work. Therefore, teachers will remain working through May 21.
"We have to continue providing educational opportunities," said board member and Superintendent Todd Flora. "And we have done so. Keeping everyone connected."
Although they have been closed, schools have continued to offer classes and assignments over the internet. This creates different levels of learning that are hard to be monitored at a distance. The board is in talks about how to quantify and benchmark the learning progress of students who will be finishing the year at home.
