City of Lake Havasu City issued the following announcement on Oct. 15.

The Lake Havasu City Police Department is partnering with the Drug Enforcement Administration and would like to announce the next Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday October 23, 2021. This one-day event will make it convenient for the public to rid their homes of potentially dangerous prescription drugs. Between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., residents in the Lake Havasu City area will be able to drop off their expired, unused, and unwanted pills free of charge at the drop-off site in front of the Lake Havasu City Police Department, located at 2360 McCulloch Boulevard North.

The program is anonymous and there will be no requests for identification to dispose of medication.  Participants may dispose of medication in its original container or by removing medication from its container and disposing directly into the disposal box. Please remove any personal identifying information from original containers. No liquids, gels, creams, sharps or inhalers are to be disposed of during this event.

The Lake Havasu City Police Department has a drop box in front of the police department that is available 24-hours a day for disposal of unwanted medication. The drop box does not accept liquids, gels, creams, sharps or inhalers and is not for commercial disposal of large quantities of unwanted drugs.

Properly disposing of the expired, unused, and unwanted pills will help prevent drug abuse, theft, and overdose deaths.  According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to misuse and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from the medicine cabinets of family and friends.
