The Mesa Historic Preservation Board has announced the winners of the 2023 Historical Essay and Visual Contest. The contest winners were recognized during Downtown Historic Preservation Day May 13 at the Nile Theater and at the May 15 Mesa City Council meeting as part of National Historic Preservation Month:

First Place Essay Contest Winner: Stormy Wingate from Eagleridge Enrichment Program for “The Women Who Made Mesa Possible.” Sophia Mateo of Edison Elementary School for “Mesa, Arizona History is Famous”

Second Place Essay Contest Winner: Jaida Funicello from Fremont Junior High for “The 100 Year Difference”

Visual Arts Contest Winner was a tie for first place: Autumn Brown from Carson Junior High for “Diving Lady” and Elliana Coldwater from Eduprize Schools for “Buckhorn Baths”

Fourth, fifth and sixth graders in Mesa participated in the essay contest while the visual arts contest was open to seventh through 12th graders. Mesa Historic Preservation Board members judged the essays on historical accuracy, writing or visual skills and creativity.
