CHANDLER, Ariz. – Work is expected to begin next week on a storm drain, water and sewer improvement project in the Galveston neighborhood in Chandler.
This project will improve the storm drain system along Erie Street between Exeter and Monte Vista streets, including contributing flows from along Nevada, Detroit, Hamilton, Flint and Jackson streets. These improvements will direct stormwater to the existing Detroit Basin, also known as Gazelle Meadows Park, located at 500 N. Exeter St.

In addition to storm drain system improvements, this project includes improvements to the existing potable water system and sanitary sewer systems to be completed simultaneously in Phase 1. Phase 2 will include neighborhood park, roadway, and other associated infrastructure improvements in the neighborhood.

On Sept. 21, Chandler City Council approved an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) between the city and the Flood Control District of Maricopa County for the construction, construction management, operation, and maintenance of the Detroit Basin area drainage improvements with costs shared between the district and the city.

On the same date, City Council awarded a professional services agreement to Ardurra Group, Inc., for the Detroit Basin/Gazelle Meadows Park storm system and associated improvements for construction management services. A related Construction Manager at Risk Construction Services Agreement with Achen Gardner Construction, LLC was also approved at the council meeting.

Engineering design and modeling began in spring 2022 and construction is anticipated to begin the week of Nov. 6. Street excavation will be required during construction to install large underground pipes. Access to residences and businesses will be maintained.

Some of the storm drain, water and sewer improvements may include:

•    A deeper basin at the Gazelle Meadows Park

•    Additional park amenities, based on public input gathered in fall 2022

•    New potable waterline along Erie Street

•    Sewer line rehabilitation along Exeter and Erie streets

•    Underground storm drainpipes and inlets near or along Erie, Nevada, Detroit and Hamilton streets

This project is part of the city’s revitalization effort to support the Galveston neighborhood through improved infrastructure and added amenities. Throughout the project phases, amenities will include additional parking at the park, stamped concrete to add character to intersections, new asphalt, ADA improvements, shaded benches, additional playground equipment, updated landscaping, new site furniture, shaded picnic areas and a basketball court.

Chandler Unified School District (CUSD) and project partners, architect Orcutt | Winslow and general contractor McCarthy Building Companies, have started construction on the reimagined Galveston Elementary School. The updated school design will be able to accommodate 750 students, the future enrollment estimate. Student enrollment now is approximately 400.

In addition, a local non-profit, Live Love, is currently building a community center called “The Oasis” in the Galveston neighborhood. The vision for this two-acre parcel includes a community garden, a learning center and a gathering space.
