In a bid to improve services and ensure equal access to recreational activities for the entire community, the City of Chandler's Parks and Recreation Divisions are working towards obtaining a Certified Autism Center designation. The move reflects the city's dedication to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for individuals with autism and sensory sensitivities, as well as their families and caregivers.

Chandler City Council recently approved an agreement with the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) to qualify the Community Services Department, Parks and Recreation Divisions for the certification. This designation will enhance the city's commitment to providing specialized services for individuals with autism.

To achieve the certified autism designation, the Parks and Recreation Divisions have allocated $10,000 in ongoing funding for training and program development. This investment will ensure that staff members are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to support individuals with autism and sensory sensitivities.

The comprehensive training program will cover various roles within the Parks and Recreation Divisions, including groundskeepers, lifeguards, and front desk staff. It aims to enhance awareness and understanding of autism-related needs, as well as provide safety and communication protocols based on best practices.

In addition to training, IBCCES will conduct five facility audits at parks and recreation amenities to provide recommendations on enhancing accessibility. These audits will focus on strategies to make Chandler's community spaces more inclusive and accommodating for individuals with autism.

"This initiative reflects our commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for individuals with autism and sensory sensitivities, as well as their families and caretakers," said the City of Chandler.

The Parks and Recreation Divisions will be the first in the city to go through the credentialing process, with the possibility of expanding it to other areas in the future. The goal is to ensure that individuals with autism have equal opportunities to enjoy the city's parks and recreational facilities.
