On May 16, 2024, Congressman Paul A. Gosar (AZ-09) issued a statement in response to new data released by Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The data revealed that 179,725 illegal aliens crossed the southern border in April.
In his statement, Gosar said, “Since Joe Biden took office, 11 million illegal aliens have surged across the border, including nearly 180,000 lawbreakers last month. This does not include another two million 'gotaways' who have made their way into our country undetected." He added that criminals are causing destruction in communities and putting strain on law enforcement.
Gosar also highlighted an alarming statistic: "330 terrorists on the watchlist have now entered the United States in the past three years, including at least 80 this year."
In addition to human crossings, Gosar pointed out the issue of drug trafficking. "Another 1,300 pounds of deadly fentanyl were seized in April, equivalent to 300 million lethal doses. Since Biden took office, roughly 29 tons of fentanyl has entered our country," he stated. Gosar emphasized the devastating impact of this drug on American society: "Fentanyl is the leading cause of death for Americans ages 18-45, accounting for more than 112,000 fatal drug overdoses last year."
Finally, Gosar criticized President Biden's immigration policies and their financial implications: "Mr. Biden’s 94 executive actions on immigration and his failed open border policies created the border invasion and it is costing taxpayers $451 billion each year." He mentioned that House Republicans passed a stringent border security bill (H.R. 2) last May but claimed that Senator Schumer and President Biden refuse to support it. "They would rather have a wide-open border than a safe America,” concluded Congressman Gosar.
