Tempe Public Library issued the following announcement on July 19.
Tempe Public Library is now home to a unique public art installation that captures the journey of reading while infusing the imaginations of local youth. The Bridge Beyond is on display at the Tempe Youth Library, a visual reminder that books act as a bridge to bring us beyond what we already know.
Artist Shela Yu was inspired by her own childhood experiences at her local library. She remembers scanning through the book aisles, reading the book covers and choosing a book to curl up with later. To bring those memories back to life in a new way, she hosted a workshop for local youth who designed their own book covers. The artwork incorporates the final designs, some of which were drawn by kids as young as six years old.
This artwork was commissioned by Tempe Public Art, in partnership with Tempe Public Library, with support from the Tempe Arts and Culture Commission. It was commissioned in fall of 2020 and installed in spring of 2021.
