Mohave Community College issued the following announcement on Dec. 2.
The holiday season is here and that means a lot of great food is going to be cooked and eaten. Mohave Community College’s Culinary Club recently prepared various cuts of meats and sides as part of its Holiday Offerings event.
MCC Culinary Club is a student organization based on the MCC Bullhead City campus. Student’s don’t have to be in the culinary program to be a part of the club.
The club decided to hold this event as a way to give back to their community. This is the second-year students have provided the opportunity to have a holiday meal without all the hassle. This season students were preparing lamb crown and prime rib roast, trussed herb chicken, turkey, single meals, and various sides.
MCC Culinary Arts instructor, Chef Alana Johnson, said this is a great way for students to practice and learn the process of catering for an event.
“From the start to finish it shows you step by step how to make an event successful and it shows them how to interact with customers it lets them talk to people one on one and interact with the community,” she said.
Lori Barker joined the culinary program in the fall semester. She said the Holiday Offerings event is important to her because it gives her an opportunity to learn and help the community, especially those who are unable to cook for themselves.
The club sold a total of 78 single meals, 49 butcher meats and 25 family meals. Funds from the meals sold will cover the cost of food and go toward club community service events, collaborations with other student organizations, and training sessions where students can learn new culinary techniques.
Students who are in the culinary program have the chance to earn an Associate of Applied Science in Culinary Arts Management in two years and go straight into a career field. The program offers certificates in Baking and Pastry, Culinary Arts, Food Management and Food Preparation.
